About the Event
"Monarchy or Democracy?" - a timeless question that continues to ignite passionate discussions across Nepal. From social media to campus canteens, from newsrooms to public forums, this debate has become a central topic everywhere. In recent times, the rise in monarchist support, accompanied by widespread street protests, has made this debate more pressing than ever.
What is an Oxford-Style Debate? The Oxford-style debate, developed at the University of Oxford, features two opposing sides, the Proposition (in favor of the topic) and the Opposition (against it). Each side presents structured arguments, rebuts opposing views, and engages in direct intellectual confrontation.
What sets this debate apart? • The audience plays an active role. You won't just listen, you'll participate. • Audience members will have the opportunity to question the speakers (political representatives) directly during the debate, making this event highly interactive, engaging, and rooted in democratic values.
Our Speakers for the debate:
Proposition (In favor of Democracy): 1. Ms. Usha Kiran Timilsina – Leader, CPN-UML 2. Mr. Binod Raj Joshi – Central Member, Nepal Student Union
Opposition (In favor of Monarchy): 1. Mr. Sharad Raj Pathak – General Secretary, Rastriya Prajatantra Party 2. Mr. Jay Prakash Bagale – Former President, Rastriya Prajatantrik Student Organization
Moderator: Mr. Gaurav Bhandari – Central Member, Youth Congress Nepal
Why You Should Attend: • Be part of a highly engaging and intellectual debate. • Ask direct questions to your leaders on history, policy, and Nepal's future. • Witness real-time clash of ideas among national-level youth and political leaders. • Contribute to a public dialogue that's shaping the direction of the country.
